J.C. Penney Bets On A Marketplace

Sales fell more than 8% last quarter, so the retailer is widening its online shelf instead of its inventory.

J.C. Penney's total net sales fell more than 8% in the second quarter, the retailer said Monday, as it continues to lose market share to rivals. To try to reverse the slide, the department store chain is launching an online marketplace, letting it widen its selection without carrying everything in its own inventory.

Not everything is sliding: activewear and, surprisingly, beauty categories bucked the trend and grew. The marketplace launch is J.C. Penney's bet that offering more without holding more inventory can help it claw back some of the share it's been losing.
