Batam's Taps Run Dry, Not the Data Centers

Residents in Batam's Nongsa economic zone lost clean water entirely while the data centers next door kept flowing.

Residents in Batam's Nongsa Special Economic Zone say their clean water supply has been cut off completely, even as the data centers operating in the same zone continue to receive all the water they need. The disparity was enough to bring residents out in protest, a rare public pushback against the infrastructure priorities that come with Indonesia's push into the data-center business.

Batam sits just across the strait from Singapore, and its economic-zone status has made it attractive to digital infrastructure investment. But a dispute over something as basic as running water shows what that investment can cost the people who already live there, and raises an uncomfortable question about whose needs get served first when a booming industry and ordinary residents draw from the same taps.

A Deadly Day for Garment Factories

Eight died in a China denim-wash fire the same day two Bangladesh factory incidents killed at least ten more.

A blaze at a denim-washing facility in Foshan, in southern China, killed eight people. On the same day, two separate factory incidents in Bangladesh left at least 10 workers dead, according to WWD.

Fashion's manufacturing safety record keeps surfacing the same problem: the facilities behind cheap, fast denim and apparel are often where the risk is highest, and it keeps recurring despite years of promised reform. Coming on a single day, the two incidents are a blunt reminder that the industry's supply-chain safety gaps, from washing plants to garment lines, remain far from closed.

Glenn Martens' Last Party at Diesel

The designer closed six transformative years at Diesel with an SS27 show built around performance and pleasure.

Glenn Martens staged his final Diesel show, wrapping up a six-year run at the brand with an SS27 collection billed as a party about pleasure, complete with sensual performance art on the runway. The show doubled as a celebration of the era he built at Diesel before his exit.

Martens's departure was announced last week, but the finale gives the story its real ending: six years that remade Diesel's identity, closed out with a send-off rather than a quiet exit. Meta's New Glasses, Cheaper and Smarter

Zuckerberg unveiled a slimmed-down VR headset and new Ray-Ban Meta glasses, with a privacy fix promised to follow.

At Meta Connect, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a handful of new smart glasses, including a slimmed-down VR headset alongside the Ray-Ban Meta Audio and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3. It's the company's latest push to make its wearables lineup both more affordable and more capable.

Alongside the hardware, Meta said it's bringing its Private Processing encryption service to the smart glasses line, addressing criticism the devices have faced over privacy. Cameras and always-on microphones in wearables have been a sticking point since Meta's smart glasses first launched, so the promise matters as much as the new products themselves, if Meta actually delivers it soon.
