Bekasi Train Crash Driver Now Charged

Police have charged the driver behind the April crash that killed 16 women in a women-only carriage in West Java.

On April 28, a long-distance train slammed into the rear carriage of a stationary commuter train near Bekasi Timur station in West Java — a car reserved for women. Sixteen women died in the collision. Five months on, police have filed criminal charges against the train driver they say caused the crash, marking the first major step toward accountability for one of the year's deadliest rail accidents on Java.

The charge brings some closure to a tragedy that shook commuters across Greater Jakarta, where women-only carriages exist for safety, not to become the site of one of the year's worst disasters. It's likely to renew questions about signal and dispatch protocols on Indonesia's crowded commuter lines, and whether the driver alone should answer for it.

Selfridges Turns a Profit at Last

The London department store swung to a £13 million profit in fiscal 2025 as CEO strategy under Maeder starts to show results.
