NTT Earthquake Death Toll Under Scrutiny

Indonesia's disaster agency faces calls for an inquiry after questions emerge over how it counted quake deaths in East Nusa Tenggara.

A magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) left a recorded death toll of 142, according to Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). But at least 94 of those recorded casualties have now come under question, prompting fresh calls for an independent investigation into exactly how the figures were compiled and verified.

The dispute matters beyond the numbers themselves: accurate death tolls shape how aid and reconstruction funds are allocated, and how families get closure. It also lands awkwardly for Jakarta, which has already been criticised for cutting disaster-mitigation budgets even as disasters, from quakes to wildfires, keep testing the country's response capacity.
